As we take stock of the circus that is the special counsel’s investigation into the Trump campaigns alleged collusion with Russia, as well as all the soap-opera shenanigans which have sprung from it, it’s hard to imagine “We the People” having any just due process if we ever needed it. From the embarrassing and possibly criminal behavior of former FBI Director Jim Comey, a man sworn to uphold the absolute highest law enforcement standard, to the unprofessional and highly prejudicial behavior of a sitting federal judge at a sentencing hearing, the slow and steady deterioration of the freest and fairest justice system on planet earth is painfully evident.
Now I’m not condoning lying to the FBI, or Congress, and I’m certainly not suggesting that the manipulation of our election system or collusion with foreign entities is any small matter. Moreover, we must continue to have faith in agencies like the FBI and their field agents, many of whom literally stand between us and “them” every single day. Nevertheless, the hypocrisy and politics of personal destruction displayed by some in positions of authority in this country who see themselves as above the law, is and should be an extremely frightening thing to all Americans.
In the end, we look to the process to protect us from things like entrapment and the prejudicial application of our laws. But watching things like Comey’s tirade on Capitol Hill yesterday and the sentencing hearing of Lt. Gen. Flynn definitely make me wonder how much longer we will enjoy that process…
